Step-by-step guide to start using WordPress 5.8+ block theme templates to save time and improve standardization when creating new posts and pages.
Prerequisites
- WordPress 5.8+
- Templates enabled in theme
Step 1
Start by creating a new post using the block editor. In the Post settings sidebar, you’ll see an option called Template. Select the “Add template” icon to enter the editor.

Step 2
Design the layout of your posts using any combination of theme, pattern, or regular blocks.

Step 3
Save your template by click on Publish. This action allows you to save changes to both the post and the template by selecting or unselecting the respective check boxes. Note that template changes will apply to all posts that have used this template.
Note
When you create a new page, it will be automatically assigned the template called “Page”. When you create a new post, it will be automatically assigned the template called “Single”, if those template exist.

Step 4
Enjoy the convenience, consistency, and time savings offered by using the template in future posts. Simply select the template name from the drop-down list.
